Interview with Dave Boardman

How long have you lived in the Upper Calder Valley?
Since Feb 1999 - Viv liked Hebden Bridge, so for a birthday present I rented a house here for six months...we never got round to leaving.

Where is your favourite place, personally, in the Upper Calder Valley?
Walking the dog on the hills above Hebden - oh, and the Trades Club!

Who, in the local community, is your "Local Hero"?
Duncan Smethurst, sound engineer at the Trades Club, is one of those people who quietly makes Hebden Bridge what it is ... and few people notice them.

What do you think this area should be most proud of?
Not having a Tory MP, let's hope it stays that way.

If you could wave a magic wand and change three things in the area, what would they be?
Annual funding for World on Your Doorstep Festival, open up the car park at 'Walkley's Clogs' so people didn't have to bring cars to the town centre, a ski lift up to Dodnaze.

What is your general occupation?
Generally early in the week I lecture at Bradford University, later in the week I promote live music at the Trades Club.

What is the most satisfying bit about what you do?
Its great when a gig goes well, people have had a great night out and go home happy and in a good mood.

What is the most frustrating part about what you do?
When you put on a great gig and only a handful of people turn up to witness it.

What was your very first job?
Structural enginering draughtsman, then the arse fell out of the building trade and I've done many varied jobs since.

How do you relax?

What's the best film you've seen recently?

What is your favourite food?
Papa's do really good vegetarian pizza.

If you were Prime Minister, what’s the very first thing you would do?
Nationalise the banks.

As cheap and easily available oil is expected to run out in the next couple of decades, what do you think will be the predominant form of transport in 2030?
Its difficult to beat walking with the dog.

Have you got any guilty carbon secrets?
Only that I try to avoid checking my footprint.

What have you done, personally, that you were most proud of?
Managed to get a feminist babe to marry me and contributed to the subsequent production of two more fantastic women.

What single issue are you most concerned about in the world at large?
The arms trade. I'd make it illegal to profit from the production of guns etc.

Which person in the public eye do you most admire and why?
Paolo Maldini is the best defender football has seen in a long time.

What are your three favourite websites of the moment?

Thanks very much Dave!
